“Survival Kit” in New York City

A gentler version to this post is: Street Ethics in New York City

When going around New York City- Keep right at all times for your own safety;

Try not to stare at people;

Avoid looking at someone as though “dressing him/her down”before something unexpectedly bad might happen to you;

Cooperate like the other customers in any deli or restaurant by cleaning your own mess and throwing your own garbage;

Queue as others do in any establishment you go into; do not by-pass others who have lined up ahead of you;

Wait for the train riders to come out of the train before you board;

When inside the train, look for a seat; if not available, hold on to the pole or corner of the bench. Be mindful of the announcements especially the reminders on Sexual Harassment or Unattended big bags or containers. One such reminder that is consistently drilled to your memory: STAND CLEAR OF THE CLOSING DOORS.

Plan your carry bags such that you do not burden yourself;

If at all possible try not to make it a habit to carry plastic bags all the time before you join the rank of the “bag lady”;

As you keep roaming around or going around New York City, you observe some people who talk to themselves or  seem to act not to your usual liking, do not attempt to comment or volunteer to do something, it might do you more harm than good;

Be dressed appropriately such that since it is Winter, bundle up for your protection from chill and rain;

Have a Map of New York City uploaded in your cell phone or ask for a free Map from personnel in the Subway Station;

Use the Metro Card properly as you enter the subway station. Make sure the “black” line with the arrows under it are pointed forward; and

Hello, Welcome, Thank You as “second nature” greetings. It does not hurt to smile when saying it. The bus driver or cashier or anyone who helps you smiles when you do this.

Like any SURVIVAL KIT, it is open to changes as the need arises. So make your own TIPS and share it. We can compare experiences someday. What is essential is that we become safe because we try to prevent it. As they say: “Prevention is better than Cure”.

3 Foodie Experiences in New York City to make Newbie Happy

Newbie is a status that is not entirely foreign but definitely new to the elderly bloggers or perhaps just me! This blog is a Foodie experience for a Newbie in New York City whose palate personally felt happy. Of my 2-week stay, three stood out:

1) Essen in 34th Street, Manhattan

Call it providential, the food service that is near my daughter’s work place is ESSEN. It is here where I eat my breakfast, lunch and snacks while I wait for my daughter. Its food offerings are varied and inviting, whether for meals or for snacks. Imagine going around the food choices that make your mouth water.

My first eating experience included grapes, bread, scrambled eggs, sausage, coffee for breakfast. The second consisted of soup, shrimps, white rice, meat cutlets and drinks for lunch.

As to the price, usually I paid between $8 and $11. My daughter joined me for her lunch. This would give you the impression that a good hearty meal would be around this price range  The food you choose is weighed. You are in a very conducive place, internet service notwithstanding.

For travelers who use the Penn Station, you have a place you can try. It is just few blocks away. You deserve a new place to bond while eating as a family. In fact I saw many parents with their children who eat there just as I see young professionals who discuss their work issues while at table.

2) Lobster Place and Dessert at Chelsea Market

Just the thought of ordering lobster is somewhat thinking of “lobster” luxury but once in a while one needs a lobster pleasure eating experience.

The place to be is Chelsea Market in 75 Ninth Avenue, New York, NY 10011 (between 15th and 16th streets). Head to the Lobster Foodie.

In my 68th years, this is a first! Lobster meal experience – no smell just plain soft, supple, orange meat in front of you waiting to be devoured with gusto! This awesome meal complete with its pair: New England Clam Chowder plus canned drinks. All in all around $75 but worth more when you roll your eyes with contentment and a thumbs up: sheer excellent meal. The lobster is weighed according to your budget or share one medium order and share with a friend or relative.

Having been filled with awesome, satisfying supper, next in the menu is an equally super dessert. Proceed to Sarabeth’s Bakery to properly end the sumptuous supper with cheese cake and creme brulee. If you have sweet tooth, this is your niche but even if you are not, it is a must taste. My daughter vouched for its creaminess and cheesiness now I am joining her to confirm.

Take note Chelsea Market has so much more to offer, not just lobster so relax: sandwiches are available, different drinks and if your budget will not allow you yet, you can just stroll around and another time will do.

Take note: Chelsea Market has so much more to offer, not just lobster so relax: bars abound, pop up bazaar for crafts and paintings. If your budget will not allow you yet then, you can always come back!

3) Ribs, Chicken, Steaks at BBQ Dallas Restaurant

There are recipes for breakfast, for lunch, for supper. Barbecue is one food that can be served any time of the day. But lunch or supper would be most appropriate I dare say. In our case, we ate Barbecue at Dallas for our supper and what a SUPPER!

We ordered 1 chicken and back ribs barbecue and 2 orders for baby back ribs bbq. Pina colada and soda for our drinks.

When I looked at my own baby back ribs ready for the taking, my mouth went wow!

Every order is completed with corn bread, butter. How I went through every piece of the long rib barbecue is one for the books! I went through the bbq with mucho gusto!

All in all around, $100 more or less for a foodie that made our stomachs happily chirpy! In some cases, money spent the delicious way is worth what money is for!

So as my daughter would always remind me, we deserve t splurge once in a while. Also I am only a 2 week-old newbie in New York City. Expect part 2, 3, 4 as more foodie opportunities come my way…

BON APPETIT!!!
