If there is one fear that is inevitable it is to live alone – as in physically alone. When this happens, it is best to consider the following points:
1. Precisely because it is inevitable, then there is nothing that is more practical to do that to accept it;
2. The mere idea of acceptance will go a long way in minimizing the feeling of loneliness;
3. In the course of living alone, there are some projects or hobbies one can engage in. In my case, I have begun gardening and landscaping and traveling. I am sure yours will be different so feel free to go beyond your usual routine;
4. Fellow ladies, each of us has become the best in our own endeavors so I do not pretend to be better. Allow me however to paint a scenario when in the midst of “aloneness” is really an opportunity to venture into volunteerism and unscheduled visits and travels. Being a teacher all my life, it was very difficult to engage in activities as free as possible. When retirement comes, anything/everything is game;
5. Life is short and as such, the spiritual aspect of life must never be taken for granted. Regardless what religion you have chosen to practise, there is in each of us a longing for the beyond, which for us catholics, we call heaven. In this context, we use some of our energies for something spiritual. After all, earth is not yet heaven.” There is life after death”, many of us believe in this doctrine and if not worded like this, a reality similar to this; The idea of eternity is not new since men and women are made in the image and likeness of God; and
6. Be open to Life! Be an optimist!! Be positive!!! In connection with living alone, openness to life implies openness to this stage of life when you may be alone most times because your children/brothers and sisters have families of their own so as a fact of life all we can do is utter:that is life! Once you are open, the next qualities are easier to imbibe: you become an optimist and a positivist! Wow!!!
